Permanent Hair Removal

Permanent hair removal is something that many of us dream of each morning as we dutifully remove pesky, unwanted hair via razors, tweezers or wax strips. While there are many forms of hair removal currently available to consumers, few can claim to be permanent. Because of this, it is up to each consumer to do proper research, learn about these different hair removal techniques, and determine whether or not they will provide successful results. The two forms of hair removal that currently claim to be permanent are electrolysis and laser hair removal. Read below to determine whether or not these treatments can get you the results you desire.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis was the first form of permanent hair removal to hit the market and is still the only treatment that can claim to get 100 percent removal. This may sound like your perfect solution, but first learn how the treatment works. Whether used for permanent facial hair removal or permanent body hair removal, electrolysis involves a tool called an epilator. The epilator is a needle-like device that is inserted into each hair follicle individually. The epilator sends an electrical current to the hair follicle, which cuts off the blood supply and renders it inactive.

While this treatment can provide excellent results to patients no matter their hair color or skin tone, it is a treatment that takes time. Each hair follicle must be treated individually, and not all hair follicles are effectively treated the first time around. It can take anywhere from two to four years to remove all unwanted hair from a specific area of the body, so those who undergo treatment must be patient with the results. While it is quite tedious, electrolysis can permanently remove any and all unwanted hair.

Laser Hair Removal

One of the most frequently asked questions considering this treatment is, ‘is laser hair removal permanent?’ While laser treatments can effectively remove unwanted facial and body hair, it is only FDA approved for permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. But don’t let this deter you. Laser hair removal is a revolutionary procedure that can effectively remove 85 to 99 percent of unwanted hair. So how does the procedure work?

Permanent laser hair removal treatments utilize pigment-seeking light in order to effectively target and remove unwanted hair. The laser is passed over the area being treated; the light penetrates through the outer layers of skin and is attracted to the follicles that lay below. The light transforms into heat and that heat cauterizes the blood supply to the hair, rendering the follicle inactive. The treatment only works on actively growing hair follicles however, and only 15 to 20 percent of our hair is in the active growth cycle at any given time; this means that a series of treatments are needed in order to see maximum results.
